At a conference on the role of unions in the fight for the right to housing, our comrades from the Association of Greek Workers of Quebec received a letter of support from the Greek union PAME, which they shared with us.

In addition to expressing the solidarity of our Greek comrades, this letter is interesting because it establishes a link between the authoritarian austerity measures currently being implemented by governments, the development of the arms industry throughout the West, and the increasingly clear prospect of future wars, as evidenced by statements from European governments.

This should give us pause to reflect on the recent decisions of the Canadian and Quebec governments. The CCMM-CSN will not allow politicians in the pay of the rich and powerful to drag us into their murderous campaigns without resistance!

Dear comrades,

PAME sends warm militant and internationalist greetings to your event today and to the great mobilization of the trade unions on November 29th.

Your struggle is our struggle. It is part of a single, international front against a strategy that governments unfold across the world. Our rights, our wages, education, health care, social welfare and people’s freedoms are sacrificed for the profits of the capitalists and the aims of imperialist alliances and antagonisms.

In Europe this is crystal clear. The transformation of the EU economy into a war economy is underway. Military spending is skyrocketing, the Greek government allocates 5% of the GDP to NATO needs, inflation is crushing the people, housing has become unaffordable, health and education are collapsing, and at the same time repression is intensifying against unions, demonstrations, and initiatives of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

In Greece, comrade Markos Bekris, president of the dockworkers trade union of Piraeus and cadre of PAME, is being prosecuted because workers blocked the loading of weapons destined for Israel. In France, the General Secretary of the CGT Nord was sentenced to one year in prison because he stood with the Palestinian people. These prosecutions are not “isolated incidents.” They are part of the new normal of the war economy.

At the same time, the leaders of the EU governments openly admit what is coming. The German Defence Minister declares that Europe must “prepare for a decade of war.” The Greek Defence Minister speaks of “necessary sacrifices” in view of the military confrontation with Russia. And the Chief of Staff of the French Army calls on society to accept “the prospect of losses.”

In this context, the attempt by your government to restrict trade union activity, to impose crushing obligations, to attack their political intervention and to prevent the creation of social alliances, is not an exception. It is part of the same generalized strategy: to keep unions silent, powerless, harmless.

At the same time, in Greece workers have waged two major strike battles, on October 1st and October 14th, against the 13-hour workday, against the demands of the EU’s war economy, against the imperialist war and the involvement of Greece in it. These strikes sent a clear message of solidarity with the Palestinian people, at a time when the Greek government was providing weapons and infrastructure for the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, for the genocide of the Palestinian people by the murderous state of Israel.

In October, a PAME delegation was in the occupied West Bank, in Ramallah, Jerusalem, Tulkarem and Jericho, standing with the workers, the refugee families and the heroic people of Palestine. We were there, on the soil of Palestine, to express the solidarity of the working class of Greece. To honour the sacrifices, dignity and struggle of a people resisting decades of occupation and barbarity, fighting bravely against the war machine of the Israeli murderous state and its allies, the USA, NATO and the EU.

Trade unions exist to defend the life of the working class in total: housing, income, the rights of women and migrants, peace, social justice. This is why the attack on the political role and action of trade unions is an attack on the very life of the working class.

Comrades, your mobilization on November 29th is a powerful response. It shows that the working class, when it stands tall, can stop any bill, any policy, any government that serves capital. In the same direction, the trade unions in Greece are escalating the struggle for a 7-hour day, 5-day week, 35-hour week, and for Collective Agreements with substantial wage increases. We continue decisively for immediate measures against tax robbery and high prices, so that health care, welfare, education, housing, public transport, water, energy are not unaffordable commodities. So that our people do not pay the bill of the war economy and the country’s involvement in imperialist wars.

From Montreal to Athens, workers have the same problems and the same enemy: the capitalists, the imperialist unions and their governments. But we also share a powerful weapon, internationalist, class solidarity.

We wish you strength and success.

Your struggle gives us courage, and our struggle becomes stronger thanks to you.

Long live the international solidarity of the working class.

Long live the struggles of the workers of Canada.

Χαιρετισμός ΠΑΜΕ – 25 Νοεμβρίου για Καναδά

Αγαπητοί σύντροφοι,

Το ΠΑΜΕ στέλνει θερμούς, μαχητικούς και διεθνιστικούς χαιρετισμούς στη σημερινή σας εκδήλωση και στη μεγάλη κινητοποίηση των συνδικάτων στις 29 Νοέμβρη.

Ο αγώνας σας είναι και δικός μας. Αποτελεί μέρος ενός ενιαίου, διεθνούς μετώπου απέναντι σε μια στρατηγική που εφαρμόζουν οι κυβερνήσεις σε όλο τον κόσμο. Τα δικαιώματά μας, οι μισθοί μας, η παιδεία, η υγεία, η κοινωνική πρόνοια και οι ελευθερίες του λαού θυσιάζονται για τα κέρδη των καπιταλιστών και για τους στόχους των ιμπεριαλιστικών συμμαχιών και ανταγωνισμών.

Στην Ευρώπη αυτό είναι πλέον ξεκάθαρο. Η μετατροπή της οικονομίας της ΕΕ σε πολεμική οικονομία βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη. Οι στρατιωτικές δαπάνες εκτοξεύονται, η ελληνική κυβέρνηση διαθέτει το 5% του ΑΕΠ για τις ανάγκες του ΝΑΤΟ, ο πληθωρισμός τσακίζει τον λαό, η στέγη είναι απρόσιτη, υγεία και παιδεία καταρρέουν, ενώ την ίδια στιγμή η καταστολή εντείνεται ενάντια στα συνδικάτα, στις διαδηλώσεις και στις πρωτοβουλίες αλληλεγγύης στον παλαιστινιακό λαό.

Στην Ελλάδα, ο σύντροφος Μάρκος Μπεκρής, πρόεδρος του Σωματείου Λιμενεργατών Πειραιά ΕΝΕΔΕΠ και στέλεχος του ΠΑΜΕ, διώκεται επειδή οι εργαζόμενοι εμπόδισαν τη φόρτωση όπλων με προορισμό το Ισραήλ. Στη Γαλλία, ο γενικός γραμματέας της CGT Nord καταδικάστηκε σε ένα έτος φυλάκισης επειδή στάθηκε στο πλευρό του παλαιστινιακού λαού. Αυτές οι διώξεις δεν είναι «μεμονωμένα περιστατικά». Είναι μέρος της νέας κανονικότητας της πολεμικής οικονομίας.

Ταυτόχρονα, οι ηγέτες των κυβερνήσεων της ΕΕ ομολογούν πλέον ανοιχτά τι έρχεται. Ο Γερμανός Υπουργός Άμυνας δηλώνει ότι η Ευρώπη πρέπει «να προετοιμαστεί για μια δεκαετία πολέμου». Ο Έλληνας Υπουργός Άμυνας μιλά για «αναγκαίες θυσίες» ενόψει της στρατιωτικής αντιπαράθεσης με τη Ρωσία. Και ο Αρχηγός του Γαλλικού Γενικού Επιτελείου καλεί την κοινωνία να αποδεχτεί «την προοπτική απωλειών».

Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, η προσπάθεια της κυβέρνησής σας να περιορίσει τη συνδικαλιστική δράση, να επιβάλει δυσβάσταχτες υποχρεώσεις, να χτυπήσει την πολιτική παρέμβαση των συνδικάτων και να εμποδίσει τη συγκρότηση συμμαχιών, δεν αποτελεί εξαίρεση. Είναι μέρος της ίδιας γενικευμένης στρατηγικής: να κρατήσουν τα συνδικάτα σιωπηλά, ανίσχυρα, ακίνδυνα.

Στην Ελλάδα, οι εργαζόμενοι έδωσαν δύο μεγάλες απεργιακές μάχες, την 1η και στις 14 Οκτώβρη, ενάντια στη 13ωρη δουλειά, ενάντια στις απαιτήσεις της πολεμικής οικονομίας της ΕΕ, ενάντια στον ιμπεριαλιστικό πόλεμο και στην εμπλοκή της Ελλάδας σε αυτόν. Αυτές οι απεργίες έστειλαν ένα καθαρό μήνυμα αλληλεγγύης προς τον παλαιστινιακό λαό, τη στιγμή που η ελληνική κυβέρνηση παρείχε όπλα και υποδομές για τους πολέμους στην Ουκρανία και στη Μέση Ανατολή, για τη γενοκτονία του παλαιστινιακού λαού από το δολοφονικό κράτος του Ισραήλ.

Τον Οκτώβρη, αντιπροσωπεία του ΠΑΜΕ βρέθηκε στην κατεχόμενη Δυτική Όχθη, στη Ραμάλα, την Ιερουσαλήμ, την Τουλκαρέμ και την Ιεριχώ, δίπλα στους εργάτες, τις προσφυγικές οικογένειες και τον ηρωικό λαό της Παλαιστίνης. Ήμασταν εκεί, στη γη της Παλαιστίνης, για να εκφράσουμε την αλληλεγγύη της εργατικής τάξης της Ελλάδας, για να τιμήσουμε τις θυσίες, την αξιοπρέπεια και τον αγώνα ενός λαού που αντιστέκεται δεκαετίες στην κατοχή και τη βαρβαρότητα, που παλεύει γενναία ενάντια στη μηχανή πολέμου του δολοφονικού ισραηλινού κράτους και των συμμάχων του, των ΗΠΑ, του ΝΑΤΟ και της ΕΕ.

Τα συνδικάτα υπάρχουν για να υπερασπίζονται τη ζωή της εργατικής τάξης στο σύνολό της: τη στέγη, το εισόδημα, τα δικαιώματα των γυναικών και των μεταναστών, την ειρήνη, την κοινωνική δικαιοσύνη. Γι’ αυτό και η επίθεση στον πολιτικό ρόλο και τη δράση των συνδικάτων είναι επίθεση στην ίδια τη ζωή της εργατικής τάξης.

Σύντροφοι, η κινητοποίησή σας στις 29 Νοέμβρη είναι μια ισχυρή απάντηση. Δείχνει ότι η εργατική τάξη, όταν σηκώνεται όρθια, μπορεί να σταματήσει κάθε νομοσχέδιο, κάθε πολιτική, κάθε κυβέρνηση που υπηρετεί το κεφάλαιο. Στην ίδια κατεύθυνση, τα συνδικάτα στην Ελλάδα κλιμακώνουν τον αγώνα για 7ωρο–5ήμερο–35ωρο και για Συλλογικές Συμβάσεις με ουσιαστικές αυξήσεις. Συνεχίζουμε αποφασιστικά για άμεσα μέτρα απέναντι στη φοροληστεία και την ακρίβεια, ώστε υγεία, πρόνοια, παιδεία, στέγη, μεταφορές, νερό, ενέργεια να μην είναι πανάκριβα εμπορεύματα. Ώστε ο λαός μας να μην πληρώνει τον λογαριασμό της πολεμικής οικονομίας και της εμπλοκής της χώρας σε ιμπεριαλιστικούς πολέμους.

Από το Μόντρεαλ ως την Αθήνα, οι εργάτες έχουμε τα ίδια προβλήματα και τον ίδιο εχθρό: τους καπιταλιστές, τις ιμπεριαλιστικές ενώσεις και τις κυβερνήσεις τους. Αλλά μοιραζόμαστε και ένα πανίσχυρο όπλο: τη διεθνιστική, ταξική αλληλεγγύη.

Σας ευχόμαστε δύναμη και επιτυχία.

Ο αγώνας σας μάς δίνει κουράγιο, και ο δικός μας αγώνας γίνεται πιο δυνατός χάρη σε εσάς.

Ζήτω η διεθνής αλληλεγγύη της εργατικής τάξης.
