La négociation de la convention collective, qui détermine les conditions dans lesquelles les membres d’un milieu de travail passeront une grande partie de leur vie, est trop souvent perçue comme un moment où les travailleurs et travailleuses remettent leur sort à une table de négociation distante et à une équipe de professionnel.les chargée d’élaborer une stratégie pour eux et elles.
Une autre approche prône l’implication massive des travailleuses et travailleurs dans toutes les facettes de la négociation, de l’élaboration du cahier de demandes jusqu’à la table de négociation elle-même, afin de puiser dans la plus grande source de pouvoir d’un syndicat : ses membres.
Afin de mieux comprendre l’éventail de méthodes à travers lesquelles la participation des membres peut être canalisée dans le contexte des négociations, nous avons la chance d’accueillir Kristin Warner, organisatrice et négociatrice syndicale avec plus de deux décennies d’expérience dans l’organisation de négociations syndicales qui s’appuie sur un engagement massif des membres.
Elle est profondément engagée à soutenir les travailleuses et travailleurs dans la construction de leur pouvoir sur les décisions qui affectent leur vie — et à gagner. Ancré dans une conviction selon laquelle l’action collective peut à la fois émanciper et bousculer l’ordre établi, le travail de Kristin repose sur l’idée que des travailleuses et travailleurs organisé·es sont indispensables pour obtenir des changements politiques et sociaux significatifs. Elle possède une solide expérience dans la conduite de démarches de négociation ouverte à grande échelle, qui transforment les syndicats locaux en élargissant le leadership, la participation et le pouvoir collectif.
Kristin est directrice de Build the Base, Grow the Movement au Workplace Justice Lab de l’Université Rutgers. Elle a auparavant occupé des postes de direction au sein de l’American Federation of Teachers (AFT), de l’AFSCME Council 93, de la Vermont State Employees Association et de SEIU Nevada. Elle est également formatrice au Labor Center de l’Université de Californie à Berkeley.

Collective bargaining, which determines the conditions under which workers in an industry will spend a large part of their lives, is too often seen as a moment when workers hand over their fate to a distant bargaining table and to a team of professionals tasked with developing a strategy that they are then expected to follow.
Another approach calls for the broad involvement of workers in every aspect of the negotiation process, from developing the bargaining demands to sitting at the negotiating table itself, in order to draw on a union’s greatest source of power: its members.
To better understand the range of methods through which member participation can be channeled in the context of negotiations, we are fortunate to welcome Kristin Warner, a union organizer and negotiator with more than two decades of experience organizing high-participation collective bargaining processes.
Kristin Warner brings more than two decades of experience in the labor movement as a successful organizer, director, trainer, legislative liaison, lead negotiator, and strategist.
She is deeply committed to supporting workers in building power over the decisions that impact their lives—and to winning. Grounded in a long-held belief that collective action can both empower and disrupt, Kristin’s work is rooted in the understanding that organized workers are essential to achieving meaningful political and social change. She is well-versed in leading large-scale, open bargaining efforts that transform local unions by expanding leadership, participation, and collective power.
Kristin serves as Director of Build the Base, Grow the Movement at the Workplace Justice Lab at Rutgers University. She previously held senior staff roles with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), AFSCME Council 93, the Vermont State Employees Association, and SEIU Nevada. She is also a trainer with UC Berkeley’s Labor Center.
